Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's lacrosse team took home an impressive victory on Saturday, 23-9, over William Peace University on Senior Day to start the 2021 season.
Marymount took full control in the first quarter, totaling 11 goals in the opening frame.
Freshman Paul Vey put away the game's first goal for a lead just over one minute into the game, but the Pacers tallied the next two scores.
Senior Clark Akers found classmate Jonah Mackiewicz to tie the game and spark a 10-2 run to end the quarter. Mackiewicz scored three goals in the run, while Akers and junior Hunter Ralston, each, tallied two.
Leading 11-3 after the first, the Saints added five-more goals in the second quarter to push the lead to double-digits, 16-5, by halftime. Junior Troy Tangolics only needed 45 seconds to net the opening goal of the quarter and continue the onslaught, and freshman Collin DeBruyn added the first score of his career.
At the break, the Saints had tallied 37 shots, while holding the Pacers to 16. Marymount also won 13-22 faceoffs and led the ground ball tally, 26-15. Mackiewicz had four of his team-high five goals in the first half, as well.
Marymount did not relinquish its control in the second half, outscoring the Pacers 7-4, with three goals coming from freshman Jack Williams. Mackiewicz added his final tally, while freshman Joseph Sciortino added the first of his career.
Senior Joshua Buxton made the start in goal for the Saints, earning the win in just over 20 minutes in the cage and making seven saves. Junior Anthony Olivo (two saves) and junior Brandon Hall (six saves), also saw time in goal.
The Saints dominated at the faceoff "X" in the second half, only losing two, and finishing the game 25-for-35 on faceoffs.
Before the game, the Saints honored the careers of seniors Billal Kamara, Nicholas Kinstler, Buxton, Mackiewicz, Cole Kocovsky, Matthew Wendell, and Colin Birch.
Marymount will return to action on Tuesday, March 16 at St. Mary's College of Maryland; the opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
