Similar to the Army vs. Navy "Star Series" and other athletic department rivalries across the country, each team in the department (in sports that both schools sponsor) will have an equal chance to contribute points toward their institution claiming the Cup.
Each sport can earn one point for their school by defeating their local rival, with Olympic sports selecting an invitational/tournament, dual meet or performance list comparison to count as their Pope's Cup event. Each game of a baseball or softball doubleheader will count for half a point. Teams will not be required to compete against each other in every sport.
In future years, the winning university will be presented with the Cup at one of the final competitions of the school year. If the overall Cup points are tied at the end of the year, the previous champion will retain the cup.
Students, alumni, family and friends are encouraged to attend Pope's Cup rivalry games and root on their favorite teams as they look to help their university win the trophy.
As of the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year, Catholic holds a 3-0 record in the Pope's Cup.
