Saints Catch Fire In Eighth, Overcome Seven-Run Deficit To Top Generals

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball rallied back with nine runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a five-run deficit Thursday afternoon at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, topping Washington & Lee University, 11-7, in a non-conference battle.

It was a slow start for the Saints' bats, not finding home plate until the sixth inning, while the Generals scored runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 7-0 advantage.

In the sixth, it was back-to-back homers that put two runs on the board for Marymount, as seniors Michael Wade and Austin Sizemore went yard in the four and five hole to cut the deficit to five runs.

The bases were silent on both sides through the seventh and into the eighth until the Saints erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the frame to take a four-run lead that wouldn't falter. In the inning, Marymount connected on six hits.

The momentum gained after a run-down situation happened during Wade's fielder's choice, as freshmen Ryan Lee and David Kurzrock had the Generals tossing the ball all over the infield to try and catch one of the two of the base. On a last effort, Lee caught W&L on a mishap on a throw to slide in at home for the first run.

Sizemore and senior Conner Hall followed with two-RBI hits, as Sizemore doubled to right center and Hall knocked a single to left field. A few batters later, Hall scored on a passed ball.

After senior Nick Smutko was intentionally walked to load the bases, senior Luke Tyree needed just two pitches to rip a liner up the left-field line to score sophomores Bill Wojcik and Casey Baker for a two-RBI double to give Marymount the lead.

The final two runs were sent across on a two-RBI single to right field to bring home Tyree and Smutko.

In the top of the ninth, Hall moved to the mound from shortstop and needed just three batters to seal up the win for the Saints, grounding out the first batter and striking out the next two.

Six different Saints saw the mound, as sophomore Ryan Bergenhagen's eighth inning appearance earned him the win.

The team jumps back into Atlantic East competition on Saturday, April 20 with an important twin bill at Gwynedd Mercy University. Game one is set for 12 p.m.
