Two career highs for senior Christian Lutz lead Marymount to victory over Wesley

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's lacrosse team hosted its first-ever Atlantic East Conference matchup on Saturday against Wesley College, coming away with a 15-6 win in a dominating performance at Long Bridge Park.

Senior Christian Lutz set the tone with a career-best performance at the faceoff "X." He set two career highs for himself on the day, winning 21-of-23 face-offs (91%) and picking up a game-high 21 ground balls.

Marymount dominated all sides of the field in the contest from the start. Sophomore Clark Akers got things started for the Saints early, as senior Sean Friedman connected with him within the first five minutes to put the Saints up, 1-0.

Freshman Kyle Johnson put away an unassisted tally just over a minute later, before Akers netted his second for a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes of play.

With goals at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second, the Wolverines cut the Saints' lead to one, 3-2, but on the next offensive possession, freshman Troy Tangolics buried the ball with just two seconds remaining on the shot clock, beginning a nine-goal run that lasted until the 3:33 mark of the third quarter.

Freshman Riley Scales found the cage to give Marymount a 5-2 halftime lead.

At the break, Marymount led in shots, 19-13, and ground balls, 21-9, while Lutz was 9-for-9 on faceoffs.

Akers came out of the break assisting goals by junior Michael Burns and sophomore Nicholas Kinstler, before finding the back of the net himself.

Tangolics and Kinstler each added their second goals in the run, while freshman Hunter Ralston and Friedman also scored, pushing the Saint lead to 12-2.

Sophomore Jonah Mackiewicz, senior Matthew Ebert, and Burns capped the scoring for the Saints in the fourth quarter.

Akers led the team with five points on three goals and two assists.

Senior goalie Grey Clarkson was in the net for the first 45 minutes, earning the win and making seven saves. The final frame of play was seen by senior Patrick Ruleman between the pipes, who tallied a save.

Marymount continues Atlantic East play in its next game, hosting Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday, April 3 at Long Bridge Park; the game is set for 7 p.m.
