Clarkson's Career Day Helps Saints Top Grove City

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's lacrosse team hosted its fifth annual "Wade's Army" game on Saturday afternoon, coming out on top over Grove City College, 11-7, with strong performances from all sides of the field.

The Saints took very little time to find the back of the net with senior Christian Lutz winng the opening faceoff to advance the ball to the attack. From there, freshman Riley Scales found fellow freshman Hunter Ralston to open the scoring.

However, the Wolverines had an answer, tying the game at one just two minutes later. Marymount broke the tie not even a minute later, as sophomore Jonah Mackiewicz found the back of the net. The first quarter went back-and-forth again until Mackiewicz hit the net with 38 seconds left to give the Saints a one-goal advantage after one quarter.

To start the second quarter, both teams added one goal to their total. With a 4-3 lead, the Saints' offense scored four unanswered goals to increase the lead to five by halftime. Ralston recorded his second goal of the game during this run, as well as Scales who recorded two himself.

The third quarter was a defensive showdown. The ball only hit the back of the net three times, twice for the Wolverines, and once for the Saints. There were 12 total turnovers between both sides.

With a 9-5 lead at the start of the fourth, Marymount looked to close the game. Freshman Troy Tangolics received a pass, and with time and room, he pushed the lead to four.

Sophomore Clark Akers led all teams in scoring with seven points, recording a hat trick as well as four assists.

Senior Christian Lutz took all 21 faceoffs, finishing the game with 10 wins (47%).

Making his eighth start this season, senior Grey Clarkson was in net for all 60 minutes for the Saints. Clarkson was faced with 25 shots, making 18 saves, a new career high for the senior goalkeeper.

The Saints will host DePauw University this Wednesday night at 7 p.m., at Long Bridge Park, their last game before opening up Atlantic East Conference play.
