Late Goal By Wesley Sinks Saints In Final Road Trip Of Season

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – Three-straight fourth-quarter goals including the game winner in the final minute sunk the Marymount men's lacrosse team on the road Wednesday night at Wesley College, 9-8.

The Saints took the early momentum, holding the Wolverines scoreless through the first quarter while stacking up three goals of their own. Senior Nathan Beard found freshman Jonah Mackiewicz on the opening the finish with 5:34 left in the quarter before junior Sean Friedman went unassisted just over a minute later. In the final two minutes, junior Matthew Ebert connected with senior Brent Sulhoff to send the Saints into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Ebert picked up the scoring to open the second frame, putting MU ahead 4-0 with 13:27 left in the half. However, Wesley came to life with three-straight of its own to cut the deficit to one by the break, 4-3.

The Wolverines tied the game up to start the second half, but Friedman and sophomore Michael Burns tacked on two straight to put Marymount back out to a two-goal lead with less than 10 minutes left in the third. Wesley answered in a similar fashion with back-to-back finishes to draw it even again.

In the final minute of the third, the Saints broke the tie again when Sulhoff sent a pass to junior Rex Rizzuti for the finish and a 7-6 advantage headed to the final quarter.

Friedman connected with Ebert for his second goal of the game to open the fourth to get the Saints ahead by two for the third time. It was the final goal for Marymount with over 12 minutes left in the contest.

Wesley came through with three goals down the stretch, with the game winner finding the back of the net with 46 seconds remaining.

Ebert, Sulhoff and Friedman each had three-point nights, while Burns had two off a goal and an assist.

On the defensive end, Beard and junior Steve Ferrigno each had three caused turnovers while junior Christian Lutz and freshman DeAndre Walls scooped up 10 and six ground balls, respectively.

Lutz posted a career-high 17 faceoff victories, going 17-for-20 for the night.

Junior Patrick Ruleman tended the net for the full 60 minutes, making 12 saves.

The Saints return home to round out their 2018 schedule with the final three games. Next up is No. 9 Salisbury University on Wednesday, April 18. Start time is set for 4 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
