Late rally by Saints falls short to Wolverines in CAC Tournament

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team dropped to 1-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon, falling to Wesley College by a score of 8-7 despite a near comeback in the latter half of the game.

The Saints will now take on the University of Mary Washington on Friday, April 21 for an elimination game at 12:30 p.m., at Salisbury University.

The Wolverines drew the first run in the bottom of the first as they went ahead 1-0. But that's all they would bring across, seeing junior pitcher Dylan Gerdts work out of a bases-loaded jam with a pop out and groundout to shortstop to end that part of the frame.

The Saints evened things up in the top of the third when senior Marlon Mitchell scored off of a throwing error following a sacrifice bunt attempt by senior Lorenzo Calderon up the third-base line. However, the Wolverines, who flaunted a .322 team batting average through the regular season, would strike deeper. Wesley went on to score two runs in the fourth inning, and another four runs in the fifth, extending its lead to 7-1 while the Saints' bats, for the time being, seemed dormant.

However, Marymount struck back in the sixth inning as sophomore Conner Hall knocked in senior Brandon Orbe with a single into left field ending the three-inning drought. The Saints then scored in the seventh inning as Orbe homered to left center, scoring fellow senior Brandon Savage who had doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning.

The Saints' run continued in the eighth and ninth innings, where Mitchell sent a solo-homer over the left-field fence and senior Karlis Graubics sent a two-run shot over the right-field fence, respectively.

Unfortunately, the Saints' valiant run would not be enough. While sophomores Ryan Scheufele and Patrick Berthelette were able to combine for four innings of work, the Wolverines were able to scrap one more run via a sac-fly in the bottom of the eighth that would prevent the game from going into extra-innings.
