Box Score FROSTBURG, Md.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse squad dropped just its third loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, in a Capital Athletic Conference clash against Frostburg State University, 18-9.
Both defenses battled to keep one another off the scoreboard for the first five minutes of action, but Marymount managed to strike first. Junior Abby Wescott notched her 39th assist of the season, feeding sophomore Jessica Crew for the finish. Just 30 seconds later, freshman Eliana Cassel converted a free position for a goal, pushing the Saints ahead 2-0.
Moments later, the Bobcats finally got on the board, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1, but Wescott quickly answered with an unassisted goal of her own. Frostburg to piece together a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead over the Saints until Crew found the net on back-to-back unassisted goals to tie the game at five all with just under 13 minutes left in the first half.
The Bobcats ended the half on a 5-0 run, as the Saints trailed 10-5 heading to the benches at half.
FSU struck first to open the second half and pushed its lead to six, 11-5. However, the Saint offense came alive to put three-straight goals past the Bobcats. Cassel connected with sophomore Kellen Cannon to ignite the run. Crew went back to work and notched her third goal of the game to bring the Saints within four, while senior Catina Boster found Cannon amongst to defense to notch the final goal of the run, 11-8.
The Bobcats answered with a 5-0 run to secure a 16-8 lead. Cannon interrupted the run with an unassisted goal with just 9:26 remaining in regulation. Frostburg added another two goals before Wescott found the back of the net for the second time of the game on a free position shot, 18-10.
Sophomore Bridgette Stacom followed suit, earning a free-position shot and converting to a goal with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Senior Natalie Tinkham fed Stacom for her second-straight goal, and the Saints got back within six, 18-12, but FSU struck once more before the Saints added two-straight goals in the final minute to end the game, 19-14.
Sophomore Holly Reik played the full 60 minutes in the cage, garnering 12 saves. Crew paced the Saints on the offensive, registering a game-high five goals. Wescott followed with three goals and one assist. The squad fired off 38 total shots, three more than the Bobcats.
The women will host Bridgewater College in a non-conference matchup on Monday, March 27. First draw is set for 6 p.m., at Long Bridge Park.
