Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team dropped its first game of the season on Wednesday evening, 16-6, opening Capital Athletic Conference play against No. 7 Salisbury University.
Both defenses battled to keep one another off of the scoreboard for the first three minutes of action, but Salisbury managed to strike first before junior Kellen Cannon snuck one by the goalkeeper on a free position to tie the game, 1-1.
The Saints fell behind the Sea Gulls after they pieced together a 6-0 run. Junior Abby Wescott connected with sophomore Jessica Crew on a quick cut down the middle, to halt the stretch with 7:35 remaining in the first half. MU headed to the benches at half, trailing 10-2 following a last second goal by the Sea Gulls.
In the second half, Wescott once again found the open cutter, and sophomore Bridget Odom found the back of the net on the restart. Wescott pushed her way through the defense next for the finish, bringing the Saints within eight, 12-4.
With just under 12 minutes left in regulation, Crew found Odom cutting down the middle, who added her second goal of the game, 14-5. The Saints struck one more time before the clock expired, as sophomore Bridgette Stacom burned the defense and put one past the goalkeeper, hitting the top-left shelf of the net, 15-6.
The Saints fell short to the Sea Gulls in the end, 16-6.
Freshman Holly Reik started in the goal for the Saints, and tended for 45 minutes, notching five saves. Freshman Meagan Gagnon relieved Reik in the second-half for her second appearance in her collegiate career. Gagnon spent 15 minutes in the cage, bolstering four saves.
The women will travel to Port Charlotte, Florida for a two Spring Break games, opeing with a non-conference matchup against John Carroll University on Tuesday, March 7. First draw is set for 10 a.m.
