Box Score 2 ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team returned home for a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday afternoon against York College of Pennsylvania, sealing up a doubleheader sweep of the Spartans with a walk-off victory in game two.
Game One: Marymount 15, York 5
The Saints put together a program-setting mark in the opening game of the day, crossing 12 runs over home plate in the fourth inning to seal up the 15-5 victory.
Although Marymount put away the game midway through, York still managed to push ahead early on in this one with four runs through the opening four innings. Sophomore Collin Bazemore started on the mound for the blue and white, working six innings to give up just those four runs.
By the bottom of the fourth, the bats came alive for the Saints, including two three-run homers by freshman Luke Tyree and junior Roy Coates. Tyree opened the scoring in the inning with his homer to cut the deficit to just one. It didn't take much longer for the Saints to draw the score even when junior Brandon Savage sent a single to left field to score classmate Lorenzo Calderon. A wild pitch by the Spartan pitcher several batters later would score Savage to give the Saints a lead that wouldn't falter the rest of the way.
Coates stepped in next, launching his three-run shot over right center. The runs continued with senior Ryan Blake scoring on a wild pitch, Calderon bunting for a RBI single to score freshman Conner Hall before stealing home, and junior Brandon Orbe smacking a RBI double to right center to bring home Savage.
With a substantial 12-4 lead, the scoring didn't stop there for the Saints as Blake brought around the final three runs with a RBI single in the fifth inning and a two-RBI double in the eighth.
For the game, the Saints recorded a season-high 24 hits including five doubles, a triple and two homeruns.
Game Two: Marymount 7, York 6
Game two was quite different but ultimately still rewarding for the Saints, battling back from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with a 7-6 victory.
MU jumped on the board first in this one, bringing across one run in the first off the bat of junior Ben Berczek. The Spartans answered however over the next five innings, holding Marymount scoreless while scoring two runs of their own to take a lead heading to the bottom half of the sixth. York's 2-1 advantage would dissipate at that point when sophomore Stephen Berczek lined a homer over the right-field fence to bring home Coates for the 3-2 lead.
The Spartans answered once again, this time putting four runs up on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth to put them ahead 6-3, needing just six more outs on the defensive end to split the doubleheader for the day.
Marymount wasn't going to let that happen though, rallying for four runs of its own in the bottom of the ninth to take the walk-off victory. With runners in scoring position, Blake stepped into the box and swung for the fences, smacking a two-RBI double to left center to score Berczek and sophomore Kaden Darrow to draw the Saints within one of York with no outs.
Junior Karlis Graubics took over the base-running duties for Blake as the pinch runner, while Tyree stepped into the batter's box. With the game-tying run at second, the freshman lined a ball to right field to bring home Graubics. The play wouldn't end there, as the Spartan right fielder mishandled the ball allowing Tyree to round the bases and make his way home for the walk-off victory.
Sophomore Sean O'Connell earned the win on the mound for the game, working 1.1 innings of relief in the eight and ninth for his second victory on the hill this season.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Saints remain atop the CAC with a 9-3 record. They are back in action on Wednesday, April 6, as they travel down to Salisbury University for a single nine-inning game against the top two squads in the league. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
