Box Score 2 DOVER, Del. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team took the diamond on Sunday afternoon for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wesley College, dropping both contests by just one run including an 11-inning game two.
Game One: Wesley 4, Marymount 3
The Saints hopped onto the board first in game one, taking a 2-0 lead over the Wolverines in the third inning. Junior Lorenzo Calderon, who registered all three RBI for the contest, brought in senior Ryan Blake and freshman Luke Tyree on a grounder to the shortstop.
Wesley inched its way back to a tied game crossing a runner over home plate in the fourth and fifth inning, as the score held at 2-2 until the eighth. Tyree led off the inning with a single to left field and quickly advanced to third on two wild pitches during Calderon's at-bat. Calderon still connected on his at-bat, sending a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Tyree.
The 3-2 advantage, unfortunately, slipped away in the bottom half of the inning when the Wolverines brought around two runs to take a lead that the Saints couldn't erase in the ninth.
Sophomore Collin Bazemore commanded the mound for 6.2 innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run while striking out six. Junior John LaMotta finished out the game, striking out one and allowing just two hits and an earned run.
Game Two: Wesley 5, Marymount 4 (11 innings)
Unlike game one, the second half of the twin bill started out in Wesley's favor, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through the first four innings. Marymount cut the deficit to two in the top of the fifth again off the bat of Calderon, sending a grounder to shortstop to bring home freshman Nick Smutko.
In the sixth, the Wolverines stretched it back out to a three-run advantage on a passed ball, but in the seventh, the Saints answered with three runs which would hold the score at 4-4 into extra innings. Calderon got the scoring rolling with a RBI groundout to first base, scoring Smutko. Tyree followed it up with a RBI single to right field to score freshman Conner Hall, while junior Ben Berczek brought home Tyree on an error by the second baseman.
With neither squad unable to bring home a run before the end of the ninth, the game was sent to extra innings where the Wolverines eventually brought across the game-winning run on a RBI single in the bottom of the 11th.
The men will look to bounce back on Wednesday, April 13, as they remain on the road for another conference battle against Frostburg State University. The single nine-inning game is set for 3 p.m.
