Saints make it four straight with CAC-opening win over Bobcats

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – A seven-goal stretch by the Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team was enough to put away Frostburg State University on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park, 13-5, to register the first Capital Athletic Conference victory of the season and move its win streak to four games.

The four-game streak is the most consecutive wins by the Saints since the 2013 season when they opened up the campaign with a 4-0 record.

A potent offensive front by the blue and white fired off 30 shots in the 60 minutes of play, with 24 going on target, as freshman Bridgette Stacom paced the Saints with a career- and game-high four goals while notching her first assist of her collegiate career to tally a game-high five points.

Stacom got Marymount rolling early, earning a free-position shot in just the first minute and 30 seconds into the contest. On the left side of the fan, she crashed in on Frostburg goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum to fire off a quick shot for the 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats found themselves down a player several minutes later off a dangerous check, but that didn't stop them from pushing the ball the other way to draw the score even. Still down the player after the goal, Frostburg wasn't fast enough to keep up with Stacom again who connected on her second of the game to put the Saints back ahead on an unassisted finish.

Frostburg looked to its tall player in Emani Byrd on the next offensive series, as she knotted the score up just one more time at the 22:51 mark. The Saints had no issue answering though, seeing sophomore Abby Wescott capitalize on her first of three goals for the day before sending out a helper to freshman Bridget Odom on a great feed from the back of the net to put Marymount up 4-2.

By the 12:47 mark of the first half, the Bobcats put in their last goal for the next 26 minutes. Solid defense by the backline, led by sophomore Liah Agouras who caused a game-high four turnovers and freshman goalkeeper Holly Reik, made the Saints untouchable.

The Saints' offense fed off the solidity of the backline, cranking out seven-straight goals into the second half to push an 11-3 advantage. Freshman Jessica Crew opened up the scoring in the stretch, finding the back of the net on three-straight shots including a free position to notch her third-consecutive game with three goals. Stacom capped off the half for the blue and white with a free-position finish to send the Saints into half with an 8-3 lead.

Marymount picked up where it left off in the first half on the restart, as freshman Kelly Campbell who celebrated her birthday on Saturday sent out a pass to Wescott for the goal before notching one of her own just over a minute later. Wescott put in her final goal of the game by the 20:25 mark on an unassisted finish to push the 11-3 lead before the Bobcats tacked on their final two goals for the afternoon.

The scoring rounded out off an unassisted finish by Stacom and junior Catina Boster catching a pass from Stacom to mark a 13-5 victory.

Junior Natalie Tinkham and Crew led the Saints to an 11-9 edge in draw controls with five and four, respectively.

Reik earned her fourth-straight win in the net, registering eight saves in her 60 minutes of play.

The women hit the road for two games over the next week, as they head to Randolph College on Wednesday, March 16 for a non-conference matchup. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
