Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount women's lacrosse team took on No. 16 Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the formidable CAC foe, 19-5. The Saints slip to 4-10 on the season and 2-5 in league play with the loss.
The game remained tightly contested through the opening minutes, with the Sea Gulls (12-3, 8-0 CAC) striking first at the 26:07 mark. Salisbury upped its advantage to 2-0 about two minutes later, and again to 3-0 by the 22:48 mark.
This time, however, the Saints made their reply. Taylor Johnson slammed home a free-position shot to halve the deficit, while Natalie Tinkham found Megan McGuirk to bring Marymount within one, 3-2, with 20:49 showing.
Another Salisbury goal increased the margin to 4-2, but a spear from Tinkham – good from Jacki Belker – nullified the Sea Gulls effort and landed the Saints within one, 4-3, once again.
Not enjoying the narrow margin, the nationally-ranked Sea Gulls unleashed an unobstructed fury over the next ten minutes. Salisbury pressured the Saints backline relentlessly, netting nine unanswered tallies to up the ante to 13-3 by the 2:54 mark. Marymount had little time to muster its reply, but a lone strike from Johnson would prove the final Marymount blow in the first half.
Salisbury towed the 13-4 edge into the break.
The Sea Gulls led off the second stanza with five consecutive blasts, securing a comfortable 18-4 cushion. Abby Wescott sought out Johnson on the ensuing possession, and the senior secured her hat trick with a missile at the 8:58 mark – effectively snapping the Salisbury momentum for the 18-5 deficit.
Salisbury would have the final say, however, using a quick strike with 7:32 left to play to seal the deal at 19-5.
Marymount netminder Tylar Abrams tied a career-high with her 14 saves between the pipes.
The Saints return to Long Bridge Park for their home finale on Saturday, when they host Mary Washington in CAC action. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
