Box Score York, Pa. – A strong second quarter from York proved the Saints kryptonite on Wednesday afternoon, as the Spartans powered past the Marymount men's lacrosse team, 14-7. The Saints fall to 3-6 on the season and 0-3 in the CAC with the loss.
Despite the Spartans swiping the quick 1-0 advantage in the opening minute, Marymount responded with back-to-back blasts from Nathan Beard to steal the 2-1 lead with 12:04 to still remaining in the first. The rookie used an excellent feed from Kellan McCarthy to secure the opening chip.
Unfortunately, the Saints would not net another strike in the first as the host went on to string two more before the time expired. The Spartans held the narrow 3-2 lead heading into the second frame.
York led off the second with three unanswered goal to up the ante to 6-2 by the 13:04 mark. Matt Justice broke the Spartans streak with a man-down missile with 11:46 left on the clock – thanks in large part to a near-perfect pass from Max Rowse.
York struck with another pair to close the half – extending its advantage to 8-3 heading into the intermission. The five-goal frame proved the would-be lethal blow.
The third quarter showed an absolute battle, with the squads trading goals in the opening five minutes to bring the score to 9-4 with 10:47 showing on the ticker. Beard hit McCarthy in stride for the Saints opener, while Garrett Nealon spun his defender and blistered the back of the net with his fourth of the season – whittling the margin down to four, 9-5, at the 5:24 mark.
The fourth quarter again saw the Spartans erupt for a five-goal flurry. York opened the scoring at the 12:21 mark, but the Saints responded quickly as Nealon found Justice for his team-leading 15th goal of the season with 11:30 still remaining in the contest. Another York goal at the 8:14 mark upped the Spartans advantage to 11-6.
York built on that lead with another three unanswered goals – securing a comfortable 14-6 margin as the clock winded down.
With under a minute left to play, Nico Burns chipped in his only tally of the afternoon to cut the deficit in half, 14-7. The Saints would not have time to collect any others.
The teams proved even in groundballs, with each side scooping up 27 on the day. Likewise, on the faceoff, the squads seemed incredibly well-match, with York holding the slight advantage, 12-11.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Ferrum for a nonconference bout. Faceoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
