Box Score 2 Arlington, Va. – The Marymount baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Washington & Lee on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-8 in the opener before losing the nightcap 3-1. The Saints fall to 0-2 on the season with the losses, and 0-3 all-time against the Generals.
Washington & Lee 11, Marymount (Va.) 8
The opener saw a busy third inning unfold, with both teams plating multiple runs to break the 0-0 stalemate. Washington & Lee used back-to-back infield singles to ignite its two-run frame, with a sacrifice bunt eventually moving the runners both into scoring position. A failed pick-off attempt brought in the first run of the day, while a double down the left field line plated the Generals' second.
Not to be outdone, the Saints doubled the Washington & Lee effort in their half of the frame. Jack Breheny doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, while Lorenzo Calderon advanced him to third with a bunt single. With only one out, Brandon Savage drew a walk to load the bases for clean-up batter Brandon Orbe. Both Orbe and Ryan Blake notched RBIs after getting hit by pitch, while walks issued to Karlis Graubics and Chas Hinkle plated the frame's other two tallies.
The Generals cut the deficit in their next at-bat, using a one-out walk and a single to left to narrow the margin to just one run, 4-3.
While the fifth inning proved silent for both squads, the sixth saw Marymount erupt for another four runs. Graubics led off the frame with a smash up the middle, and would advance to third following a hit batter and a walk. Savage stepped in with the bases loaded and one out, and recorded an RBI much like those before him – taking an inside pitch to the forearm and forcing in a run.
With the bases still loaded and one run across, Washington & Lee brought in a new hurler – seeking to hopefully quell the Saints' momentum. Orbe quickly welcomed the new pitcher, smoking a double to the left center gap to clear the bases.
With an 8-3 lead in tow, the Saints needed just three outs to seal the opener. The Generals, however, were not about to go so quietly.
Washington & Lee led off the inning with back-to-back hits – a double to left field and a single up the middle, the latter of which plated a run. After starter Ben Berczek punched a strikeout, another double from the Generals plated their second run of the frame – cutting the margin to just three runs, 8-5.
With one runner on and one out, Marymount brought in Niko Sanchez to quiet the Generals' bats. A smash to shortstop Stephen Berczek's glove-side saw another run cross for Washington & Lee, while an ensuing Saints' error extended the inning even further.
Clinging to a two-run lead, 8-6, Marymount sent John Lamotta to the mound with the bases full. Another walk saw the advantage shrink to one, and a bases-clearing triple saw any semblance of a Saints' lead completely evaporate, as the Generals pulled ahead 10-8.
A single down the left field line brought in the lone runner from third, and capped the Washington & Lee seventh at eight runs. The Saints had no response in the bottom half of the frame.
Untimely errors seemed the Saints ultimate downfall, as only six of the Generals' runs proved earned. Niko Sanchez suffers the loss for Marymount and falls to 0-1 on the season.
Washington & Lee 3, Marymount (Va.) 1
The second game proved much less chaotic, as both teams seemed to have spent their offensive firepower in the opener. Washington & Lee plated all three of its runs in the second inning, using a two-out rally to beat the Saints when all was said and done.
A two-out single followed by a walk gave the Generals vision enough to break the deadlock. The next batter stepped in and unleashed a triple to deep right center to clear the bases. An ensuing single to right field plated the third run of the inning – what would be the visitors' final run of the contest.
Marymount mounted its retort in the fifth, jumping on the Generals' relief pitcher for its lone tally. Breheny led off the frame with a single to centerfield, coming home on a two-out Savage single to left.
Collin Bazemore takes the decision for the Saints, falling to 0-1 on the year with the loss.
Breheny went 3-for-5 on the day with a double and three runs scored, while Orbe led the Saints with his four RBI in the opener.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Hampden-Syndey under the lights at Barcroft Park. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
