Box Score Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team dropped a one-run heartbreaker to CAC foe Wesley on Wednesday afternoon, falling 15-14 after an impressive comeback bid. The Saints fall to 4-22 on the season and 0-12 in conference play.
Sean Gallagher and Danny Russell highlighted the Saints offensive attack as the pair posted almost identical showings at the dish. Not only did both rookies collect their first collegiate homeruns in the contest, but each of their long balls came with the bases loaded. The two grand slams helped the duo collect five RBIs apiece in the effort.
The CAC contest saw the Wolverines jump out to a 9-1 advantage over their first three at bats, but it was the bottom of the third when the game took its first interesting twist.
The Saints exploded for seven runs in their half of the third, using a mix of free passes and timely hits to extend the inning. Marymount raked Wesley starter Connor Springsteen for three runs before reliever Brad Walker came in to face Gallagher with the bases loaded. With one swing, the rookie shortstop brought the Saints within one, sending a long drive over the left center wall.
The one-run deficit didn't last long, however, as the Wolverines came back in the top of the fourth with another pair of scores, bringing the count to 11-8.
Each team plated lone tallies in the fifth before coming up empty in the following frame. The scoreboard showed a 12-9 Wesley advantage through six innings, but by the end of the seventh frame, both teams saw their totals increase once more.
The Wolverines pushed their lead to six after plating another three runs on three hits to open the inning.
Not to be outdone, the Saints mounted a fervent rebuttal in their half of the seventh. With two outs, Karlis Graubics sent a double down the right field line to give the Marymount offense the boost it needed. After a walk and a single pushed Graubics to third, Brandon Orbe delivered an RBI-single through the left side to plate the frame's first tally and load the bases for Russell. The rookie third basemen sent a bomb to deep left field to clear the bases and once again bring the Saints within only one run.
Despite a small Marymount threat in the bottom of the ninth, the day's scoring was exhausted in that lengthy seventh inning.
Graubics went 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot for the Saints, while both Bret Phillips and Ben Berczek collected three hits apiece in the effort.
The Saints return to action on Saturday when they host Southern Virginia. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
