Saints Swept By York

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team dropped a pair to conference foe York on Saturday afternoon,  falling 11-7 in the opener before dropping the nightcap 9-4 to the Spartans.  The Saints fall to 4-14 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Game one saw the top of Marymount's line-up provide most of the offense, as the top five hitters recorded nine of the Saints' ten hits.  Brandon Orbe, Bret Phillips, and Macon Heikes each went 2-for-5 in the opener, while Gannon White notched a double and a homerun to secure a 2-for-4 performance.  Karlis Graubics and Jack Breheny each added a base-knock as well.

The Spartans struck first with a pair of homeruns in their opening at bat, followed by single tallies in the second and third innings.

Faced with a 4-0 deficit heading into their half of the third, the Saints offense was able to procure two runs on three hits to cut the Spartan lead in half.  With one out, back-to-back hits from Graubics and Orbe put runners on second and third for the Blue and White.  The runners remained unmoved after a Saints strikeout, but a Heikes single up the middle would plate both to bring the score to 4-2.

The fourth inning saw both teams plate a lone run, with the Spartans upping their advantage with an additional tally in the top of the fifth.

After a scoreless sixth inning, both teams plated runs in the seventh frame.  York used a pair of hits to push across a run in the top half of the inning, while Marymount swiped a pair on its turn at the plate.  Again with one out, the Saints used back-to-back singles from Phillips and Heikes to build some momentum.  White then stepped in and sent a double to the wall in deep left center to plate Phillips and push Heikes over to third.  An Austin Schnarrs groundout allowed Heikes to trot home easily – bringing the score to 7-5 heading into the eighth inning.

While the eighth frame saw neither team provide any offense, the ninth proved quite a different story.  York exploded for four runs on three hits to lead off the final inning.  Marymount used a Gannon White homerun to plate a pair in its final at bat, though that would cap the scoring at 11-7 in York's favor to close the opener.

Jake Brown took the loss for the Saints after pitching two innings and striking out a pair.  Brown falls to 0-4 on the season with the loss.

In the nightcap, York used a big third inning rally to down the Saints early.  The Spartans plated a lone tally in the first inning, followed by five runs in the third, two in the fourth, and another single run in the fifth to drown Marymount with a 9-1 advantage heading into the sixth.

The Saints punched back with a pair in its half of the sixth frame, using a hit and a pair of Spartan errors to slowly chip away at the deficit.  Graubics led off the frame with a single down the left field line, eventually scoring after a York throwing error and a pair of fielder's choices.  Phillips – who reached on one of said fielder's choices – would proceed to move completely around the bases after Heikes forced another Spartan throwing error.

With the Spartan scoring done for the day, the Saints would tally another solo strike in their half of the eighth.  Orbe sent a double down the left field line to lead off the frame, scoring after a series of Marymount groundouts.

Six different Saints recorded hits in the nightcap.

Ben Berczek threw five innings for the Saints, fanning five Spartans in the effort.  With the loss, Berczek falls to 2-1 on the year.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts CAC rival Salisbury.  First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
