Box Score Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's baseball team dropped an 8-4 nonconference decision to Washington & Lee on Monday afternoon. The Saints fall to 4-11 on the year with the loss.
Three players accounted for seven of Marymount's eight hits, with senior Macon Heikes leading the charge with a 3-for-3 showing. Brandon Orbe and Bret Phillips posted almost identical 2-for-5 performances, each contributing a double to the Saints offensive effort.
The Saints fell behind early, surrendering a single run to the Generals in the opening frame. Orbe looked to give the Marymount offense a kick-start with his double in the top of the first, but found himself stranded on third base when all was said and done.
Facing the 1-0 deficit heading into the third, the Marymount offense found enough rhythm to overtake the General lead. Karlis Graubics led off the inning with a single to left center, advancing to second on a misplayed Anthony Perretti grounder to third. A double steal moved the runners up to second and third for Phillips, who doubled to left center to plate the pair. Phillips used a Gannon White fly-out to centerfield to advance to third base before taking home on a wild pitch, giving the Saints the 3-1 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Generals struck back in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs on two hits and a pair of Marymount errors to retake the lead 4-3.
The Saints added another score in the sixth as Heikes led off the frame with a single to left field. Brandon Savage and Austin Schnarrs were hit by pitch and walked, respectively, to load the bases for Jack Breheny. Breheny sent a liner out to centerfield to plate Heikes for the equalizer, which would also be the Saints final run of the game.
Washington & Lee added what proved to be the winning runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, stringing together three hits to plate two scores for the 6-4 advantage. The Generals used an error and a homerun in their half of the eighth to plate two insurance runs and put the Saints away.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Wesley for a CAC match-up. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m
