Baseball Rolls Past WPI in Twinbill to Improve to 10-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Marymount University Baseball team opened play in the RussMatt invitational with a twinbill against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and came out with two more wins to bring its record to a spotless 10-0.

Game One

The Saints came out of the gates with an aggressive approach at the plate against the Engineers which paid off in spades to start the game. MU put up for runs in the third inning and hung eight runs on WPI in the third inning to put the game out of reach early. The Saints limited the Engineers to four runs the rest of they way before they tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning to make it 16-4.

Senior Alex Lemery was a standout for the Saints. Lemery was 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and a pair of doubles. The senior tallied four RBI and scored three runs as he terrorized WPI's pitchers.

Senior David Kurzrock helped rack up the runs for the Saints with a career-high five RBI on two hits. Jimmy Baker added two more RBI and an additional two runs. Ryan Maylie demonstrated patience at the dish with three walks, while Ryan Lee and Jordan Dickson each added an RBI and one hit.

On the mound for the Saints, Stephen Gerade earned the win with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Paul Adragna tossed the final two innings and struckout a pair of batters.

Game Two

The second game of the twinbill was closer but the Saints outscored the Engineers with nine runs on nine hits compared to the Engineers six runs, which led to a 9-6 final score.

Both teams plated a run in the first inning, but WPI snuck ahead in the second by one run in the second frame.  The Saints responded with force in the third inning with six runs. The rally was highlighted by a two RBI single from Robby Cable that plated Dickson and Chad Singleton

MU added runs in the fourth and fifth frame to make it a 9-4 game. WPI managed to scratch across two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Clint Wheeler shut the Engineers down in the top of the seventh to earn the save and seal the victory.

Lemery and Kurzrock led Marymount at the dish, as the classmates finished 3-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Kurzrock was one of four Saints to register two RBI during the tilt, as he was joined by Lee, Dickson, and Cable.

Coleman Grehawick earned the win on bump with five strikeout in four innings of work. David Muirhead, Jarrod Schmitz, and Brett Kelley all made appearances out of the bullpen for the Blue and White. Kelley struck out a pair in an inning of work before Wheeler closed out the contest.

The Saints continue play at the RussMatt Invitational against Husson University on Wednesday, March 9th, at 4:30 p.m.
