Baseball Splits Twinbill with University of Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Marymount University baseball team split a doubleheader against the University of Mary Washington on Sunday. The Eagles ran away with the first game, 8-1, but the Saints responded with force in the second and took the game 24-4.

Game One

The Saints came out of the bullpen ready to go, but grounded out in the top of the first. The Saints continued to make contact with the ball in the top of the second inning which resulted in one run after two wild pitches by the Eagles brought Ryan Lee home. The Eagles managed two more runs over the next three innings but solidified the game in their favor with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Jimmy Baker and Ryo Fabre registered the Saints two runs while Alex Lemery and Ryan Lee worked the Saints only walks. On the mound for the Saints, Kenny Sysyn pitched 5.2 innings with two strikeouts. Brett Kelley and Nathan Saber both stepped up to the mound and Saber added an additional strikeout.

Game Two

The Saints responded quickly to the loss with three runs in the top of the first on three hits after Lemery and Baker worked walks. The Saints kept the Eagles scoreless as they added three more hits and one more run in the second inning.

The Saints made their move in the top of the fourth inning when Fabre started the hits with a single to right field. Lee followed with a single to left field and then Bryce Smith brought them home with a triple down the right field line. Baker brought Smith home with a single to center field and David Kurzrock followed with his own single. With two pitching changes for the Eagles the Saints worked five walks and advances on two wild pitches. The Saints amassed 13 runs and seven hits by the end of the fourth.

The Saints emphasized their dominance in the sixth and seventh innings, with four and three runs, respectively, while they kept the Eagles from scoring position with no hits or runs after the fifth inning.

On the mound, Drew Mead earned the win for the Saints, with four innings pitched and four strikeouts. Paul Adragna, Parker Casselberry, and Stephen Gerade each spent an inning on the mound and only allowed a combined three hits. The pitchers allowed only four hits and three runs for the game.

Max Nathan, Smith, and Jordan Dickson led the game in RBI with three each while Baker, Kurzrock, and Robby Cable each added two. Smith hit the only triple of the game while Nathan and Dickson both managed doubles. Chad Singleton, Jordan Hayes, Smith, and Baker each worked two walks, which contributed to the Saints 14 total walks.

The Saints return to the field on Wednesday, March 23, where they face Catholic University at 3:30pm on the Cardinals home turf.
