Saints Sweep Averett in Saturday Doubleheader

DANVILLE, Va. - The Marymount University baseball team flew past Averett University on Saturday afternoon in a pair of wins to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Game One

The Saints started the first game of the twinbill with a bang after Alex Lemery singled through the left side and stole two bases to put himself on third. Jimmy Baker worked a walk, while a passed ball allowed Lemery to score. Ryo Fabre brought Baker home with a double down the left field line. 

Averett managed to knot the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, but the Saints responded in the fifth inning with four runs on three hits. MU tacked on another run in the sixth inning, while a double from Lemery in the top of the seventh inning gave the game its final scoreline, 9-2. 

Kenny Sysyn got the win on the mound with a 6.0-inning effort. The senior struck out a pair while Coleman Grehawick struck out one batter to close out the seventh inning. 

Ryo Fabre finished 2-for-3 at the dish and was essential for the Saints' offense with a pair of RBI's. Bryce Smith, Ryan Maylie, Remigio Ferrara, and Lemery all added one RBI each. Lemery and Baker both finished with a game-best two runs. 

Game Two

The Saints' offense kept up its hot streak in the second tilt, as they finished they out-hit Averett, 9-3. MU's output at the plate resulted in a 6-1 win over the Cougars. 

Kyle Lewis started on the mound for the Saints and earned the win with a scoreless four innings of work. The sophomore allowed just two hits and fanned six batters to keep Averett at bay. 

While the game was tight throughout, the Blue and White scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win. With the bases loaded, Jordan Dickson worked a walk, which plated Smith. Robby Cable did the rest of the damage with a two-run single that put the Saints ahead for good. 

Lemery, Smith, and Cable all ended the tilt with two hits apiece. Fabre and Cable lifted the offense with two RBI's, while Maylie worked a team-best two walks. 

The Saints return to Nats Youth Academy on Wednesday, March 2, when they host Randolph-Macon College at 1:00 pm.
