Baseball Cruises Past Mary Baldwin in Season-Opening Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team cruised past Mary Baldwin University in a double header to open the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon.

Game One

The Saints used a strong sixth inning to push past the Fighting Squirrels in come-from-behind fashion with a final score of 6-4. The Saints' offense outhit Mary Baldwin, 14-6.  

The Saints found their stride in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Remigio Ferrara walked to start the rally. Alex Lemery batted Ferrara in with a single through the left side With one man on base and one out for the Saints, Kenny Frank stepped in as a pinch hitter and swatted  the first home run of his college career to score two runs. With the Fighting Squirrels flustered, Ryan Lee earned a free base, while John Barrie pinch ran and moved himself into scoring position with a steal. With Barrie on second, Bryce Smith hit a double to push the Saints ahead by two runs. 

Coleman Grehawick closed out the game on the mound in the seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.

Drew Mead started on the mound for the Saints and struck out six across four innings of work. Grehawick earned the win on the bump with one hit and four strikeouts in three innings. Smith and Jimmy Baker led the Saints with three hits apiece, while Lemery ended the game with a pair of RBI. 

Game Two

The Saints built off the momentum of the first game of the twinbill and dominated the second game, 10-0.  Marymount registered ten hits to Mary Baldwin's two. 

The Saints scored all of their runs on 10 hits, while their defense and pitching limited Mary Baldwin to just two hits. Smith led the game with three hits, while Lemery added another two hits, two RBI, and two runs to his ledger. David Kurzrock and Ferrara both swatted doubles, while Lemery, Smith and Baker each batted in two runs.

Kenny Sysyn got the start on the mound and earned the win with seven strikeouts across five innings. 

The Saints return to the field on Sunday, February 19, to face Widener University at 11:00 am at Nationals Youth Academy.
