Baseball splits non-conference doubleheader with St. Mary's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The Marymount University baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game, 8-7, before winning the second game, 3-1.

Game One:

St. Mary's scored five runs over the first three innings to take early control of the game, but the Saints battled back in the fourth and fifth.

A pair of singles by junior Alex Lemery and sophomore Bobby Leitzel sandwiched a walk by senior James DiGiulian to load the bases for senior Bill Wojcik. Wojcik took a walk to bring in the Saints' first run.

Marymount continued to work the count in the fifth, as senior Casey Baker and Lemery drew walks. Junior Ryan Maylie singled between the walks to load the bases, again.

Junior Ryan Lee drove in Baker on a sacrifice fly, and classmate David Kurzrock singled to score Lemery and Maylie, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.

Sophomore Bobby Leitzel tied the game on a fielder's choice and eventually came around on a wild pitch to give the Saints a 6-5 lead.

Three scoreless innings in relief for senior Stephen Gerade held the Saints lead until the seventh when the Seahawks tied the score.

Leitzel scored on another wild pitch in the top of the ninth to regain the lead, but the Seahawks answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to take the win.

Wojcik led the team with three hits in the game, while Kurzrock led with his two RBIs.

Game Two:

The Saints jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first in the second game, as Leitzel and Lemery both reached on errors. Leitzel came home on a wild pitch for the first run.

After a single by Maylie put Lemery on third, junior Bryce Smith knocked in Lemery on a sacrifice fly.

Lemery reached again in the third on a fielder's choice and subsequently stole second and third. Maylie made contact again for another single to score the run and put the Saints up, 3-0.

Senior Ryan Bergenhagen made the start and earned the win for MU, pitching five innings and only allowing four hits. He only allowed one run, which came in the fifth, as the Seahawks got on the board.

Freshman Jake Andrews and junior Clint Wheeler each pitched a scoreless inning in relief, as Wheeler earned the save in the game and closed out the Seahawks.

Marymount will now move into Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday, March 24 for its next contest, traveling to Marywood University. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
