Box Score RADNOR, Pa. -- For the third time in as many chances, the Marymount University women's volleyball team battled for the Atlantic East Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon against Cabrini University. Despite the Saints' best efforts, it was the Cavaliers who walked away with the conference trophy in a 3-1 decision.
Cabrini started the match off on the right foot offensively with team attack percentages of .303 and .227 in the first two sets, respectively. The Blue and White were unable to keep pace with their conference rival, which allowed the Cavaliers to jump out to a two-sets-to-none lead.
MU bounced back in the third frame, however. Marymount floored a match-high 16 kills during the set and swung at an impressive .343 clip to claw back into the match. The stanza featured 10 tied scores and five lead changes as the Saints battled back against Cabrini.
The Cavaliers built a 14-10 lead, but MU chipped away and eventually knotted the score at 16-16 after back-to-back kills from Maya Harris. The Blue and White seized the momentum from there and used a 4-0 run to take a 20-18 advantage. Cabrini leveled the score at 20-20, but the Saints responded once again with three consecutive points, punctuated by a kill from Kaitlyn Doyle. MU held on from there for the 25-21 win.
As the Saints pushed to force a decisive fifth set, the Cavaliers managed to open an 18-8 edge to begin the fourth frame. MU chipped away at the deficit and used a pair of 3-0 runs to pull back within four at 20-16. Cabrini pushed its lead to 23-17, but Marymount won the next four points, as Myia Jeter and Doyle pummeled the ball for two kills apiece, and brought the score to 23-21. It was too little, too late, however, as the host Cavaliers took the next points to win the set, 25-21.
A trio of Saints finished with double-figure kills. Jeter led the way with a season-high 18 kills and a match-best .469 attack percentage. The sophomore also tallied a team-high five blocks. Harris tallied a season-best 17 kills, while Doyle finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.
On defense, Sarah Pham, Natalie Garbalosa, and Elissa Munsterman all finished with double-digit digs. Pham posted 22, while Garbalosa and Munsterman finished with 16 and 14, respectively. Sydney Sands set a new career-high against the Cavaliers with 52 assists.
