Schmitz Earns First Collegiate Win To Guide Baseball To Win Over Seahawks

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team put together six-straight runs through the first five innings on Wednesday afternoon, earning the 6-4 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.

The Saints were guided by a gem of a game on the mound by sophomore Jarrod Schmitz, being awarded the win in his first collegiate start. The right-hander tossed seven complete innings, giving up just four hits and one run while striking out a career-best five batters.

The only run Schmitz allowed in the game came in the top of the first inning on a solo home run with two outs. He was helped out in the bottom of the frame when junior Bill Wojcik grounded out to the shortstop to score senior Will DiGiulian to bring the score back to even, 1-1.

Schmitz settled in the rest of the way, holding the Seahawks scoreless over the next six innings. In that stretch, the Saints continued to build their lead and momentum with five more runs.

Sophomore Bryce Smith put across the only run in the second on his second home run of the season. In the third inning, the lead moved to two with a double to left field by sophomore Ryan Maylie, bringing home junior Casey Baker. The final three runs for MU came across in the fifth inning, with Smith hitting a RBI single to score Wojcik and was followed by sophomore David Kurzrock's first home run of the year, a 2-run bomb over the left-field fence.

At the top of the eighth inning after Schmitz was relieved of his afternoon duties, the Seahawks scored three runs to cut their deficit to just two. However, with one out already on the board, senior Matt Schneider came in for relief, striking out the next two batters swinging to halt the run.

Returning in the ninth, Schneider needed just four batters to put a seal on his second save of the season.

The Saints will now hop a plane for their Spring Break trip to Fort Pierce, Florida. They'll open a six-game trip with Washington (Md.) College on Sunday, March 8. The twin bill is set to begin at 10 a.m.
