Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team played McDaniel College in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, sweeping the Green Terror in 7-3 and 3-2 wins.
GAME ONE: Marymount 7, McDaniel 3 (7 Innings):
In the first game of the day, the Saints' bats came alive, totaling 10 hits and scoring at least a run in all innings but one.
The first inning had the initial run come across home plate on a home run over the left-field fence by junior Bill Wojcik. He was followed in the second inning with a two-run bomb by sophomore Alex Lemery to right centerfield for the quick 3-0 lead.
The Green Terror crossed their first run in the top of the third, but it was quick answered in the bottom of the frame by sophomore Ryan Maylie, knocking an RBI fielder's choice to first base, bring senior Mike Ferrara home to the 4-1 advantage.
McDaniel scored its final two runs in the fifth to cut its deficit to one. However, the Saints didn't leave any doubt, adding three more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to put the game away. In the bottom of the fifth, Maylie singled through the right side to bring home junior Casey Baker. It was followed in the sixth with a fielder's choice to second base by Ferrara to score sophomore Bryce Smith, and Wojcik put the final touch on the game with a RBI single to left field.
On the mound, senior Justin DiDonato had the start, tossing five innings for four strikeouts and three earned runs. Senior Matthew Schneider came in for relief in the final two innings, not allowing a single hit while striking out two for his third save of the season.
GAME TWO: Marymount 3, McDaniel 2 (7 Innings):
In the second game, it was McDaniel to grab the game's first run, with a solo home run in the first inning, but the game would settle into a pitcher's dual, with neither team scoring more than one run in any single inning.
Sophomore Jarrod Schmitz made the start for the Saints, pitching 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and only allowing one earned run.
The Green Terror held their lead until Wojcik sent his second homer of the day to left field, in the bottom of the third, to tie the game.
McDaniel quickly regained the lead in the fourth, but Marymount, again, had the answer in the bottom of the fifth. Ferrara singled up the middle, before reaching third on a double by junior Bryan Harris. Ferrara, then, came home on a balk, bringing the game to 2-2.
After a scoreless sixth, Schmitz and senior Kenny Sysyn combined to hold the Green Terror to no hits in the top of the seventh and bring the Saints up for their final at bat. Wojcik walked to lead off and stole second. He then moved to third on a single by junior Jake Mellor. Wojcik scored the winning run on a wild pitch to complete the sweep.
Sysyn earned the win in the game, striking out the only batter he faced.
The Saints now await the final decision of the Atlantic East Conference, as it pertains to COVID-19, which will come near the end of March, to learn the decision for the rest of their season.
