Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Marymount University baseball team traveled to the University of Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon, with the game being suspended in the top of the 11th inning due to darkness, with the score at 5-5.
Sophomore Jarrod Schmitz held the Eagles scoreless through the first-four innings, allowing just two hits, as the Saints were able to grab the lead.
In the top of the fourth, walks by juniors Casey Baker and James DiGiulian sandwiched a double off the bat of sophomore Ryan Maylie to load the bases. Sophomore David Kurzrock took the third walk of the inning, scoring Baker for the 1-0 edge.
Mary Washington answered with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth for a four-run lead, 5-1, but the Saints used the late innings to battle back into the game.
Sophomore Alex Lemery singled in the seventh, eventually moving to third on a wild pitch. He came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bryce Smith.
The team continued its comeback in the eighth, getting to within one on a two-RBI triple by senior Mike Ferrara. Kurzrock was hit by a pitch, before freshman Jordan Dickson singled to set up the hit, bring the score to 5-4.
Seniors Kenny Sysyn and Justin DiDonato combined for three scoreless innings in relief, on the mound, allowing the Saints to keep the comeback attempt alive, headed into the ninth.
Junior Bill Wojcik walked to lead off the ninth, advancing to second on a wild pitch. He was moved to third on a groundout by Baker, before crossing home on a passed ball to tie the game.
Senior Matthew Schneider came in to hold the Eagles to only one hit in the ninth, forcing extra innings.
Neither team was able to tally a hit in the 10th, pushing the game to the 11th before being suspended.
The teams will continue the remainder of the game on Friday, March 20 at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, when the Saints and Eagles meet up again. The continuation will be set for 1 p.m., before playing their already scheduled contest afterwards.
