Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marymount University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Albright College on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, using late-inning runs for 10-9 and 6-5 victories.
Marymount 10, Albright 9
Junior Bill Wojcik got the high-scoring affair started off with a bang, smacking a solo home run to left field in the second inning to give Marymount its first lead.
The Lions tied the game in the third, but the Saints answered in the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Ryan Maylie for a 2-1 edge.
The game broke open in the fifth, as the teams combined for nine runs. Albright put three across in the top of the inning to take the lead, but six runs for the Saints in the bottom again flipped the advantage.
With an Albright error and sophomore Alex Lemery taking a hit by pitch, the Saints go two on, and senior Will DiGiulian bunt singled to load the bases.
Senior Mike Ferrara was hit by another pitch to score the first run, and junior James DiGiulian singled to left to drive in the second.
Wojcik came to the plate with the bases still loaded and came through, driving a grand slam over the wall to give the Saints an 8-4 lead. He finished the game two-for-three with five RBI and three runs.
Lemery tacked on another run in the sixth, driving in freshman Jordan Dickson on a sacrifice fly.
The Lions would not go away easy, plating five runners in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh to tie the game, forcing the Saints to come to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Ferrara led off with a double, before two intentional walks loaded the bases. It was sophomore Ryan Lee who came through in the clutch, smacking a single to center for the walk-off RBI, scoring Ferrara.
Senior Matthew Schneider earned the win in the game, pitching 1/3 of an inning in relief, striking out the only batter he faced.
Marymount 6, Albright 5
Albright struck first to start game two, with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Saints quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Singles by Maylie and junior Casey Baker got things going and put runners on second and third on the throw on Baker's hit.
An error brought Maylie home, before Baker stole home to tie the score.
After the Lions regained a 3-2 lead in the third, the Saints took their first lead in the bottom of the inning.
Ferrara led off with a single, before sophomore Bryce Smith walked, bringing Wojcik to the plate. He sent both runners across the plate on a double to right center, for his sixth and seventh RBI of the day.
Wojcik, then, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by James DiGiulian, giving the Saints a 5-3 edge.
Albright tied the score, 5-5, with two runs in the fifth, but Marymount would plate the winning run in the sixth.
Smith came to the plate with Ferrara on second and ripped a double to left center, giving the Saints a 6-5 lead.
Schneider earned his second win of the day, pitching the final two innings in relief. He struck out four and did not allow a hit or run to close the game out for the Saints.
Baker and Ferrara, each, tallied two hits to lead the team, while Wojcik led with two RBI.
Marymount will travel to the University of Mary Washington to its next contest on Wednesday, February 26; the first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
