Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Cairn University at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, 9-0 and 4-1.
Game One: Marymount 9, Cairn 0
The Saints got out to a quick start in their first game of the season, crossing five runs across home plate in just the first inning.
In the bottom half of the first frame, Marymount needed just three hits to secure a 5-0 lead. With runners in scoring position, junior Casey Baker earned a walk on a wild pitch. That wild pitch sent freshman Jordan Dickson from third to home and senior Mike Ferrara to third.
Quickly after, a double steal of Baker and Ferrera scored another run, and an errant throw to second from the Cairn catcher helped Baker continue around third for the 3-0 lead.
The final two runs came on a blasted ball to right centerfield by sophomore Ryan Maylie, scoring junior James DiGiulian and sophomore Brett Kelley.
While the offense earned the early lead, it allowed junior Drew Mead to settle in on the mound. Mead totaled 96 pitches to toss 5.2 shutout innings with eight strikeouts and just three hits. He was relieved in the sixth inning by senior Kenny Sysyn who continued the success on the hill.
During Mead's time, the Saints added another run in the fourth with Baker sending a single through the right side to score sophomore Alex Lemery.
In the sixth, the bats remained hot for MU, as Dickson sent a RBI single to right center to bring home Lemery again. It was followed on the next at bat for the first home run of the season, seeing Ferrera send a moonshot down the right-field line for two more runs and the 9-0 advantage.
Sysyn finished out the game in the top of the seventh, seeing just four batters with a strikeout, a line out and a fly out. Sysyn tossed 1.1 innings for two strikeouts and no hits.
Game Two: Marymount 4, Cairn 1
To start the second game, Cairn was able to get on the board first with a run in the first inning. A walk to start the game, eventually, came around to score, following a Saints' wild pitch and balk.
Senior Justin DiDonato would not give up anything else, on the mound, from there, pitching five scoreless innings. He did not allow a hit in his start, striking out 12 batters.
The Saints were able to get runners on in each of the first three innings, but were unable to capitalize on the score board. However, in the fourth, Marymount plated three to take the lead.
A walk and sacrifice bunt put DiGiulian on second to get things started, and he advanced to third on a single by Maylie.
DiGuilian came home to tie the score on the next at-bat, as Lemery singled.
Following a bunt single from senior Will DiGiulian to load the bases, Maylie scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ferrara to take the lead. Lemery, then, came home on a wild pitch.
Marymount's pitching continued to stifle the Highlanders at the plate, as senior Matthew Schneider came in for the final two innings. He completed the combined no-hitter to earn the save and strike out three.
Marymount tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth, as Baker drove home Will DiGiulian on a sacrifice bunt.
The Saints will return to action on Sunday, February 16 to finish out the weekend series with Cairn; the first pitch is set for 12 p.m.
