Baseball earns 100th program victory in extra innings, 4-3, over Catholic

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University baseball team earned the 100th win in program history on Wednesday afternoon against Catholic University of American, 4-3, as the teams needed extra innings at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.

Senior Conner Hall and junior Will DiGiulian each got out of bases-loaded jams in the 10th and 11th innings, respectively, to keep the Saints going; each got a swinging strikeout to end their inning.

After DiGiulian held the Cardinals hitless in the 12th, the Saints were able to load the bases in their half of the inning. A Cardinal error and a single by sophomore Bryan Harris got two on and forced Catholic to intentionally walk senior Luke Tyree.

With DiGiulian at the plate, a wild pitch brought home junior Mike Ferrara for the victory.

Catholic took the initial lead in the game, plating the first run in the second inning, as the Saints' offense didn't find its first hit until the fourth.

Hall got Marymount going with a bang, launching a home run to left field to tie the game.

Two runs in the fifth gave the Saints their first lead, as senior Michael Wade led off the inning with a bunt single. After reaching second on a sacrifice bunt, Wade stole third; he scored on another sacrifice bunt by sophomore James DiGiulian to take the lead, 2-1.

Tyree then singled to drive home Ferrara to double the Saints' advantage.

The Marymount pitching staff, led by junior Kenny Sysyn, freshman Jacob Hardney, freshman Bryce Smith, and senior Ryan Scheufele, combined for five scoreless innings to allow the Saints' offense to gain the lead and keep it intact. Sysyn tallied five strikeouts in two innings of work.

However, Catholic broke through for two runs in the seventh to tie the game and eventually force the extra innings.

Hall pitched two and one-third innings, while striking out seven, keeping the score tied. He also paced the offense with two hits, going 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.

DiGiulian earned the win, tossing the final two frames and striking out three; he did not allow a hit.

The Saints now look forward to the Atlantic East Conference tournament, with first-round play beginning on Friday, May 3; the Saints will take on Neumann University in their first game. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m.
