NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Marymount University baseball team collided with the top ranked team in the country on Wednesday afternoon, sitting at 4-4 through four and a half innings to Christopher Newport University before late runs through the fifth to the seventh solidified a 16-4 decision in favor of the Captains.

The runs started quickly, as the Saints put away the early 1-0 lead on the first at-bat of the game when senior Luke Tyree roped a homer over the right-field fence. That would, however, be the only run by the Saints until the third inning, while the Captains crossed four in the first and second innings to take a 4-1 advantage. 

Freshman Kenny Frank, who earned the start on the bump, was relieved in the second inning after the fourth run by the Captains scored, bringing on senior Ryan Scheufele. Scheufele kept CNU off the scoreboard for three innings, allowing just three hits while striking out two. 

In the meantime, the Saints answered with their bats in the top of the third to draw the score even at 4-4. A sacrifice fly by senior Conner Hall scored Tyree, and senior Austin Sizemore sent over his first home run of the season to score himself and senior Michael Wade. 

A scoreless fourth inning on both sides was eventually broken in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs by the Captains. Over the next two innings, they added five mroe to seal up the 16-4 decision. 

Tyree finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and a RBI, missing the cycle by just a single. 

The Saints remain in non-conference play this Saturday, April 6, traveling to Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Virginia for a neutral twin bill against Ferrum College. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
