Baseball Sweeps Mighty Macs To Close Out League Regular-Season Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Marymount University baseball team finished off Atlantic East Conference regular-season play on Saturday afternoon with a clean sweep of Immaculata University to move to an 8-4 record in league play.

Game One: Marymount 11, Immaculata 4 (7 Innings)

A slow start of the Saints in the first game of the day had them trailing 2-0 to the Mighty Macs through the first two innings. The bats heated up by the third inning, scoring runs in the each of the last five innings to take a commanding lead that wouldn't falter.

Senior Luke Tyree, who pieced together a 3-for-4 game at the plate with four RBI and a run, got the scoring started for Marymount in the third when he belted a two-run homer over the right-field fence to draw the score even.

Two more runs in the fourht off RBI singles by sophomore Casey Baker and junior Mike Ferrara gave the Saints a lead that wouldn't sway back to the Macs.

A four-run fifth inning saw the scoring come from a RBI single by senior Austin Sizemore, a sacrifice fly by Baker, and a two-RBI single by Tyree to bring home Ferrara and senior Michael Wade

Freshman David Kurzrock kept the momentum alive in the sixth with his first collegiate home run, sending a moon shot over the left-field fence for two runs, and senior Conner Hall added the last run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home sophomore James DiGiulian

On the mound, sophomore Ryan Bergenhagen toed the rubber for the start, tossing six innings for seven strikeouts and his seventh win of the season. Junior Kenny Sysyn came in for the final three outs, striking out one in the seventh.

Game Two: Marymount 15, Immaculata 14

The final game of the day played out quite differently, needing the Saints to battle adversity in the ninth inning to overcome a four-run deficit.

Trailing early with a 7-0 lead for the Mighty Macs through the first two innings, Marymount answered with four runs in the third and sixth inning, along with two runs in the fifth. However, Immaculata had consistent scoring through much of the game, maintaining a 14-10 advantage after six innings.

Scoring silence from both teams saw no runs come across through the seventh and eighth, leaving just the top of the ninth for the Saints to make up four runs to get back into the game.

Marymount stayed patient at the plate in the ninth, getting to relief pitcher Greg Grandelli. A hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks loaded up the bases for pinch-hitter freshman Bryce Smith, who also walked to bring home Wade.

He was followed by a two-RBI single by Tyree to cut the deficit to one, rounding Ferrara and freshman Ryan Lee.

With Smith at third, Tyree stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Baker. The sophomore erupted the dugout with a ripped single through the left side to score both Smith and Tyree to give the Saints a 15-14 lead.

Hall, who was also on the mound for the eighth, continued on the mound for the final three outs, finishing his two-inning stretch with no hits, one walk and four strikeouts for the win.

The Saints round out the regular season on Wednesday, May 1, hosting Catholic University at Nationals Youth Academy at 1 p.m., for a single nine-inning game.
