Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team played a back-and-forth nine-inning battle at Catholic University on Wednesday evening, falling 11-10.
The Saints put the first run on the board in the first inning when senior Austin Sizemore sent a single to right field to bring home senior Conner Hall. However, the Cardinals answered back in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own to draw the score even.
Senior Ryan Scheufele, who was giving the start on the mound, settled in after the one-run first inning with three-straight shutout innings. During that span, the offense for the Saints supported him with two more runs in the second to take a 3-1 advantage. Freshman Ryan Lee's fielder's choice scored sophomore Casey Baker, and a sacrifice fly by Hall to bring home junior Mike Ferrara tallied the two runs.
With run silence over the next few innings, Catholic sent four across in the bottom of the fifth to takeover the lead. But it wasn't long lasting, as Marymount followed with five in the sixth. A pair of sacrifice flys by senior Luke Tyree and Hall was followed by another RBI single from Sizemore and a two-RBI double by senior Michael Wade.
The 8-5 advantage held through the rest of the sixth until the Cardinals added six more runs for a lead that wouldn't sway in the closing innings.
The Saints did make a late push, sending two across in the eighth to get within one, but it wasn't enough. The two runs were scored off a double by Sizemore, his fourth hit of the game and his third and fourth RBI.
Marymount finishes out Atlantic East play this Saturday, April 27 with a twin bill at Immaculata University. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
