Saints' Late-Inning Runs Not Enough To Top No. 15 Sea Gulls

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount University baseball team scored four late-inning runs to put pressure on No. 15 Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, but the Saints came up just short, 6-4.

Solid pitching on both sides kept the scoring silent through the first two innings of the game, as freshman Jacob Hardney toed the rubber for the Saints. The first run came in the top of third for the Sea Gulls, bringing home the runner on a groundout to first base. In the fourth, a sacrifice bunt scored the second run for Salisbury, and three more were added in the fifth to move its advantage to 6-0.

However, that's the last the Sea Gulls saw home plate, but the Saints were heating up. By the sixth inning, the Saints maneuvered their first run on a double play, as senior Conner Hall sprinted home during the situation.

Through that span of time senior Ryan Scheufele and junior Will DiGiulian combined for four innings on the mound, allowing just one run and three strikeouts.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Saints got the game within two after freshman David Kurzrock laced a single to center field, scoring senior Luke Tyree. Later, with Hall on third and Kurzrock on second, freshman Ryan Lee reached first on a throwing error by the Salisbury shortstop, as Hall and Kurzrock rounded the bases to score to move the score to 6-4.

Unfortunately, in the ninth, Marymount had just one hit on a bunt single up the third baseline by Tyree, not being enough to complete the comeback.

The Saints hop back into Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday, April 13, hosting Cabrini University for a twin bill at Nationals Youth Academy. Game one is set for 2:30 p.m., with Senior Day prior to first pitch.
