Baseball Slips In Doubleheader To Muhlenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Marymount University baseball team took little time off from Friday night's game, waking up for a 9:30 a.m., seven-inning doubleheader against Muhlenberg University on Saturday in Florida.

Game One: Muhlenberg 3, Marymount 0

The first game of the day didn't go the way the Saints had hoped, dropping the seven-inning game, 3-0.

Sophomore Ryan Bergenhagen pitched the full game for Marymount, allowing just one earned run on the three, while striking out three. That one earned run came in the bottom of the second, when a single through the left side scored the Mules' first run.

The fourth inning had the other two runs come around for Muhlenberg, as a RBI double and a RBI single scored two unearned runs to bring the score to 3-0 where it remained for the rest of the game.

The Mules had just one pitcher in the game as well, as he went seven innings for two hits and 11 strikeouts while walking six Saints. Freshman Bryce Smith and senior Luke Tyree were walked twice.

Game Two: Muhlenberg 5, Marymount 4

The Saints found more offense in game two, registering six hits to the Mules' five, however, the game quickly went in favor of Muhlenberg with three runs in the first at bat.

In the bottom of the second, Marymount cut the deficit to one when senior Austin Sizemore brought around senior Nick Smutko and sophomore James DiGiulian on a two-RBI double down the left-field line.

In the third, the Mules scored two more runs to take a 5-2 lead, scoring a run following a fielding error and then the other scoring on a wild pitch.

Looking to answer again, the fourth inning added two more runs for the Saints off a fielding error by the second baseman scored senior Michael Wade and another double by Sizemore scored junior Jake Mellor

However, that was all Marymount could pull together, only having one base runner through the final three innings.

The Saints saw pitching by five different players, as starting freshman Kenny Frank and sophomore Stephen Gerade combined for five of the innings and six strikeouts.

Marymout will look to bounce back in another doubleheader on Sunday, March 10 in Florida, taking on Rhode Island College at Lake Myrtle Sports Park. Game one is set for 9:30 a.m.
