Smutko Totals Five Hits, Saints Edged by No. 24 Shenandoah

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount baseball junior Nick Smutko was 5-for-5 with three RBIs as the Saints totaled 18 hits, three shy their season high in an 18-12 nonconference loss to No. 24 Shenandoah Thursday at Bishop O'Connell High School.

Meanwhile, Marymount (9-9) allowed 18 runs on 23 hits, both season highs, as six pitchers combined to surrender five extra-base hits and six walks while facing 55 batters.

After each team plated a run in the first, the Hornets (12-6) scored six runs over the next three innings to take a 7-1 lead before the Saints tied the game with six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Smutko led off the inning with a triple to right center before scoring on the next at-bat when freshman James DiGiulian singled to right. After double by junior Luke Tyree put runners on second and third, a two-run single by Kaden Darrow pulled Marymount within three, 7-4.

A single by junior Conner Hall and a bunt by junior Austin Sizemore loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored Darrow. A two-out walk by junior Cal Berman loaded the bases for the second time before Smutko drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single to second base to score Hall and Sizemore.

After tying the game in the fourth, Smutko gave the Saints their first lead, 8-7, with a bases loaded single through the right side that scored freshman Jake Mellor.

However, the lead was short-lived as Shenandoah scored six runs in the top of the seventh, including two on a hit batsman and a wild pitch, to go back in front, 13-8. The Hornets scored the game-winning run on a two-out, two-run single to center by Grant Thompson.

Marymount got one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Hall before Berman hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Saints within three, 14-11.

Shenandoah tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth before Sizemore provided the final margin with an RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth.

Marymount's Matthew Schneider took the loss after allowing three runs over one-third of an inning in the seventh. Gerard DePhillips picked up the win for the Hornets.

Tyree finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored while Sizemore also went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Darrow and Hall each had two hits.

The Saints return to CAC play on Friday when they travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
