Baseball Splits CAC Twin Bill With Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Marymount baseball team split a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday afternoon to the University of Mary Washington at Plumeri Park on the campus of the College of William & Mary.

Game 1: Marymount 12, Mary Washington 6

The Saints blew the first game open in the top of the third with six runs on seven hits, as six different Saints earned a RBI in the inning. Freshman Jake Mellor brought the first run across when he sent a single to right field to score senior Kaden Darrow. On the next at-bat, junior Austin Sizemore grounded out to the first baseman, good enough to score junior Conner Hall from third. With Mellor on second now, junior Michael Wade sent a single to left field and Mellor rounded third and went home for the third run of the inning.

Two batters later, junior Cal Berman also dropped in a single to left field to bring home Wade before freshman James DiGiulian and junior Luke Tyree knocked back-to-back doubles to score the final two runs of the inning to push a 7-0 lead.

On the defensive side, senior pitcher Dylan Gerdts held the Eagles to just two hits through the first three innings, but UMW heated up in the bottom of the fourth with three runs of four hits to almost cut its deficit in half, 7-3.

In the fifth, Mary Washington brought around one more to bring Gerdts' day to an end, seeing sophomore Matthew Schneider come in relief. He finished the fifth with a fly out, worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with two strikeouts, and gave up just two hits in the seventh and eighth.

Through the stretch of Schneider's outing, the Saints put two more runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the sixth off a RBI double by Hall and a RBI single by Mellor.

In the ninth, the Saints put three across home plate to essentially put the game away. Berman stole home to earn the first run before Tyree sent a two-run homer over the left-center fence.

Come the bottom half of the final frame, the Eagles worked the bases loaded again, ending Schneider's day, but junior Ryan Scheufele took over to see just three batters to end the game. However, the first two batters used sacrifice flies to score the final two runs of the game.

Seven different Saints registered RBI in the game, led by Tyree's three and Mellor's two. On the bases, MU stole seven paced by Berman's two including his one at home plate.

Schneider earned the win on the mound, striking out five for the day, while Gerdts struck out three.

Game Two: Mary Washington 9, Marymount 6

The bats heated up for the Eagles early on in the final game of the day, scoring five runs in the first three innings for the 5-0 lead. A single by Scheufele in the fourth broke the scoring silence by the Saints, bringing home Berman, but that was the only run to come across until the ninth for MU while the Eagles scored four more to get out ahead, 9-1.

In the top of the ninth, four hits worked five runs to make this interesting, but UMW switched pitchers to earn the final two outs and the 9-6 decision. Scoring in the ninth came from a wild-pitch score for freshman Bill Wojcik, a two-RBI double by Tyree, and a two-RBI single by Darrow.

The Saints remain in league play for their next game, traveling to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, March 28.
