Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marymount baseball team rounded out the Bison Classic at Gallaudet University on Sunday, falling in extra innings to Muhlenberg before rebounding with a blistering victory over host Gallaudet.
MUHLENBERG 5, MARYMOUNT 4 (10 INNINGS)
This matchup remained tight the whole way through, seeing a pitchers' dual through the first seven innings by the starting pitchers. On the Marymount side, senior Dylan Gerdts was given the nod on the mound, tossing seven strikeouts through 7.0 innings of work, just one strikeout shy of a career high. For the day, he gave up just three hits and one earned run, which was the lead the Mules gained in the second inning off a solo home run.
Marymount answered with a home run of its own, as junior Michael Wade smashed one over the left-field fence to draw the score even.
Both teams would remain strong on the mound, not allowing any more runs on the scoreboard until the eighth inning. Junior Patrick Berthelette came in relief in the eighth, allowing two hits including the game's third home run, as the Mules took a 3-1 advantage.
However, the Saints rallied back in their half of the frame when junior Luke Tyree launched a homer of his own over the right-field fence, and later junior Cal Berman doubled to left center to score junior Conner Hall. Berman didn't hang on the bases long, as Wade brought in his second RBI of the game with a single up the middle to score Berman and put MU ahead 4-3.
Junior Ryan Scheufele took over in the top of the ninth to dial in for the save, but Muhlenberg found a way to get a run across. A hit by pitch to open the inning followed with a fly out to left field for the first out. On the next at-bat, the Mules send a grounded to Hall at second base who worked to turn a double play to win the game, but the toss slipped through senior shortstop Kaden Darrow's glove for the error. With just one out, the runner on second was brought home on a single through the left side to tie the game at 4-4.
Unable to get a run across in the bottom of the ninth, the Saints were put back to work on the mound in the 10th inning. The work played out a bit too much, as the Mules brought one run around a double down the right-field line to the 5-4 decision.
MARYMOUNT 24, GALLAUDET 2 (8 INNINGS)
The Saints bounced back in the 2 o'clock game with plenty of bat power, sending across 24 runs on 21 hits.
Seven different players had multiple hits in the game led by freshman Bryan Harris with a career-high four hits on five at-bats, which included his first home run of his career. He rounded the bases four times and registered three RBI.
Berman posted a career-high five runs on two hits and two walks, while smacking a triple.
The other home run besides Harris' came off the bat of junior Austin Sizemore in the top of the third inning, a three-run bomb.
On the mound, sophomore Kenny Sysyn pieced together five innings of five strikeouts and just two runs for his first win of the season. While he saw 20 batters, sophomores Matthew Schneider and Justin DiDonato saw a combined eight batters and didn't allow a single hit through the final two innings of work.
The game was called short after seven innings due to darkness.
Marymount continues on the road on Wednesday, February 28, traveling to Hampen-Sydney for a 2:30 p.m., first pitch.
