Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Marymount baseball team opened up the year on the road at perennial powerhouse Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon, falling 11-1.
Senior Collin Bazemore, two-time All-CAC pitcher, got the nod on the hill for the season opener. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets got to him early, scoring six earned runs through his four innings of work. Bazemore also registered four strikeouts in his senior-season debut.
Through the remaining four innings, four different pitchers saw time for the Saints including collegiate firsts for freshmen Stephen Gerade and Drew Mead. Each pitched an inning, while Gerade had a clean line.
The lone run for Marymount came in the top of the ninth. Junior Kaden Darrow opened the inning with a double to right centerfield, and was shifted to second on a groundout to the shortstop by freshman Gavin Canipe. Darrow was brought home on the next at-bat when senior Javier Herrera grounded out to the shortstop for the RBI.
The strong pitching by the Yellow Jackets held the Saints to just two hits for the game, the double by Darrow and the first collegiate hit by freshman designated hitter, Bill Wojcik.
The Saints will look to rally this weekend as they open up the Bison Classic at Gallaudet University on Friday, February 23. Marymount will take on Southern Vermont in the first of three games for the weekend with a 2 p.m., first pitch.
