Baseball caps off regular season with victory over Bison

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team closed out the regular season on Sunday afternoon, rolling past Gallaudet University, 11-1.

The Bison scored their only run of the game in the top of the first inning before senior pitcher Spenser Davis dialed in for the rest of day on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings for just three hits, one run and five strikeouts.

The Saints quickly erased the deficit in the bottom half of the first, when senior Karlis Graubics sent a ball toward the shortstop that caused an error, scoring seniors Brandon Savage and Lorenzo Calderon for the 2-1 advantage.

The runs continued to roll through the remainder of the game, seeing four more come across in the third. Graubics kicked it off with a bunt back toward the pitcher and a throwing error to first to score senior Marlon Mitchell and sophomore Luke Tyree. Graubics wouldn't hang on second for long, scoring on an RBI single by sophomore Cal Berman a few batters later. Sophomore Austin Sizemore capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home sophomore Conner Hall for the 6-1 lead.

An error in the fourth inning extended the lead further before a pair of 2-RBI triples rounded out the game in the sixth and seventh innings by Tyree and sophomore Michael Wade, respectively, to bolster the 11-1 victory to cap off the year.

The rest of the senior pitching staff put in solid work in the closing 3.2 innings of the game. John LaMotta gave relief to Davis in the sixth, tossing 1.1 for no hits and two strikeouts, before Scott Robison came in with two outs in the seventh to pitch 1.0 for a strikeout and no runs. Jake Kniatt continued the impressive day on the mound for the Saints through the final 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit in his work on the hill.

The Saints close out the regular season with a 20-21 record.
