Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team fell on Wednesday afternoon, 6-2, to Eastern Mennonite University in its continued Spring Break trip in Florida.
Senior Jake Kniatt took the mound for his first start of the season, working 4.0 innings for the Saints. Working a quick opening frame on three up-three down following two fly outs and a ground out, Kniatt gave the Saints the first opportunity to put runs on the board. However, the similar situation happened in the bottom half of the first, as the Saints were set down in order.
Two doubles by the Royals in the second inning scored the first two runs of the game, and another on a single in the third, pushed the score to 3-0 heading to the fourth.
No more runs scored for either team up until the seventh inning, with the fielding by each team holding strong. This included a two-out, two-runners on scenario in favor for the Saints in the bottom of the sixth. With junior Kaden Darrow stepping in to bat, he smacked a hard-hit ball to right-center field that the center fielder ran down and got parallel to catch to end the inning, stranding two runners in scoring position.
In the seventh, two more runners came across, and a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth pushed the Royal advantage to 6-0.
By the bottom of the frame, the Saints broke the silence on the scoreboard with a 2-RBI double to left field by senior Lorenzo Calderon, scoring sophomore Conner Hall and senior Brandon Savage.
The Saints cap off their trip on Thursday, March 9 with a nine-inning game against Iowa Wesleyan. First pitch is schedule for 9 a.m.
