Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team completed day two of its Spring Break trip in Florida with another twin-bill split, dropping the first game on a walk off in the bottom of the seventh before cruising by in game two against Husson University.
Game 1: Husson 3, Marymount 2
Senior Spenser Davis pitched a gem of a game in his second start this season, tossing five scoreless innings. By the fourth frame, the Saints found home plate to take a 2-0 lead.
With sophomore Luke Tyree singling to open the inning, junior Hayes Nelson moved him over on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Roy Coates quickly brought Tyree home on the next at-bat with a RBI single. Coates didn't stay at first base for long, as junior Stephen Berczek launched a ball to the fence in right-center field for the RBI triple.
The Eagles finally brought a run in during the sixth on a RBI triple that would draw Davis' day on the mound to an end. Sophomore Patrick Berthelette came in relief, allowing one more run to draw the score even.
Unable to get a run across in the top of the final inning, the Saints saw the game to a close on a error up the first-base line that brought home a Eagle runner from third base to take the 3-2 decision.
Game 2: Marymount 10, Husson 2
Freshman Kenny Sysyn took the start in game two for the first time in his collegiate career, not disappointing in his debut with six innings on the mound for just one earned run and two strikeouts.
Husson got on the board first in the second inning off a RBI double and an error on the Saints, but Marymount countered with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame. Back-to-back two-RBI doubles by sophomore Nick Smutko and senior Lorenzo Calderon kicked off the runs, before Calderon eventually scored on a wild pitch. Tyree, on his at-bat, scored junior Kaden Darrow on a RBI double of his own, and Coates ended the inning with a RBI single to bring home Tyree.
In the fifth, Smutko continued the hot bat for the Saints with his first triple of the season, scoring sophomore Conner Hall and Berczek, before Calderon scored Smutko on the next at-bat.
Sysyn was relieved in the top of the seventh by senior Jake Kniatt, who gave up just one hit followed by three line outs to end the game, 10-2.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday, March 8, taking on Eastern Mennonite University in Florida for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
