Saints split twin bill against Mary Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team split their doubleheader with Capital Athletic Conference opponent, the University of Mary Washington, on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game, 3-2, and taking the second game, 9-6.

Game One: Mary Washington 3, Marymount 2

Junior Dylan Gerdts started on the mound for the first game, and notched a pair of strike outs while giving up just three runs in his five-inning effort. However, those three runs would prove to be all Mary Washington would need. UMW's Stephen Johnston singled up the middle in the top of the first, scoring Brian Burns to put the Eagles up by one. Kevin Bynum doubled in the top of the third knocking in a RBI, and Brian Burns homered to left field putting the Eagles up by three.

The Saints rallied in the bottom of the sixth when senior Brandon Orbe hit a sac-fly to left field, scoring Lorenzo Calderon. Senior Karlis Graubics stepped up in the bottom of the eighth and launched a ball to right-center, but an outstanding catch by centerfielder Kyle Bynum would eliminate the chance to knock in at least one RBI. Senior Brandon Savage knocked his third homerun of the season with a blast to right field, in a last-ditch effort in the bottom of the ninth. However, the Saints comeback effort would fall short resulting in a 2-3 loss.

Game Two: Marymount 9, Mary Washington 6

The second game saw an abundance of scoring by the Saints. Sophomore Nick Smutko started it up for MU, singling with a bunt to second base and scoring Conner Hall in the second inning. Freshman Max Larimore picked right back up in the bottom of the second, scoring Calderon on a base hit to centerfield before Orbe later cranked a homerun of his own in the fifth inning to left field, good for two runs.

The Eagles did not remain silent though, with a single in the sixth scoring two runs. The Saints answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame, seeing sophomore Luke Tyree singling to left and scoring freshman Drew Blevins and Hall. Orbe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Tyree to complete his trip around the bases. Larimore capped off the inning and captured the Saints' final two runs with a single up the middle to score Savage and Calderon.

Mary Washington's efforts in the seventh and eighth innings would fall short, as four runs would not be enough to catch up with the Saints' offense.

Senior Spenser Davis improves to 1-1 on the mound this season, and junior Collin Bazemore continued his outstanding week with a save to put next to his complete game win earlier in the week.

The squad will head to Penn State University-Harrisburg for a CAC matchup on Wednesday March 29. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
