Baseball hangs on against Lions for second-straight CAC victory

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team edged out its second-straight Capital Athletic Conference win on Friday afternoon, topping Penn State University-Harrisburg at Bishop O'Connell High School, 10-9.

The Saints propelled themselves into an early 7-0 lead, scoring five runs in the first inning and two runs in the third. Freshman Kenny Sysyn got the nod for Marymount, striking out four and giving up just three runs in his four-inning campaign.

Senior Brandon Orbe led the offensive effort in the first inning, singling up the middle and knocking in two RBI. Sophomore Nick Smutko and junior Kaden Darrow also contributed RBI of their own, seeing Smutko single up the middle to score sophomore Conner Hall in the third, and then knocked in senior Karlis Graubics in the fifth. Darrow also singled up the middle in the third inning, bringing in Smutko, and then doubled down the left field line to bring in Hall later. Senior Lorenzo Calderon chipped in another RBI for the Saints, driving a double down the right-field line in the fifth inning to score Smutko.

However, Penn State would not remain silent. They would go on to score three runs in the fourth inning, five runs in the sixth inning, and then one in the ninth. However, it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit.

Junior Javier Herrera put the ball in play in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring Calderon and advancing Orbe to third off a Lions' error. Orbe would go on to score off a throwing error by the catcher, trying to catch Herrera stealing second base.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Scheufele captured his first collegiate win, while Hall nabbed his fourth save of the season.

The Saints return to action on Saturday, March 25 with a doubleheader against the University of Mary Washington at Bishop O'Connell High School. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
