Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball traveled down to the Eastern Shore of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon for game two of the season series against No. 11 Salisbury University, falling short of the season sweep with a 4-1 decision.
With the loss, the Saints move back into a three-way tie for first place in the Capital Athletic Conference with Salisbury and Frostburg State University, each sporting a 9-4 record.
Senior Charlie DiGiulian started on the mound for MU, looking to keep the game scoreless into the second after the Saints couldn't get the offense rolling in their first at-bat. Looking to settle in with a groundout and a strikeout, DiGiulian surrendered the first two runs of the game several batters later when Salisbury's Pete Grasso dropped a two RBI double into left field.
The senior remained composed though, ending the inning on the next at-bat with a fly out and kept the Sea Gulls off the board in the second as well with two more strikeouts and a groundout to freshman Conner Hall at shortstop.
DiGiulian continued to battle the Salisbury offense in the bottom of the third to halt the Sea Gull 2-0 lead, working two outs including his fourth strikeout of the game, but he would be relieved of his duties following a bases-load walk by junior John LaMotta.
LaMotta, who is tied for second in the country in plate appearances, took the hill for his 19th time this season, working 1.1 innings to give up just one hit to hold Salisbury to three runs before sophomore Sean O'Connell came in to finish out the final four innings on the mound.
While O'Connell kept the Sea Gulls tamed on the offensive end, the bats started to warm up against Grasso in the seventh inning. Freshman Michael Wade, with one out, sent a double to deep left centerfield before freshman Luke Tyree worked his way on base off a six-pitch walk to force SU to make adjustments.
With a new pitcher on the mound in Connor Shockley for Salisbury, sophomore Stephen Berczek kept his bat still for four of the five pitches to load up the bases on another walk. Junior Brandon Savage stepped in next, launching a high ball into centerfield, as Wade tagged third and reached home on the sacrifice fly to get within two, 3-1.
O'Connell worked a three up, three down seventh inning to hold the score at 3-1, but the Saints were unable to get anymore runners across home plate the rest of the game.
The Sea Gulls would score one more runner in the bottom of the eighth, eventually taking the 4-1 decision to draw up a three-way knot in the top of the CAC.
The Saints will look to bounce back on Saturday, April 9, as they remain on the road with a nine-inning twin bill at Wesley College in another conference matchup. Game one is set for 12 p.m.
