DiGiulian, Saints push past Cardinals for 23rd win of season

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After a strong showing at the Capital Athletic Conference tournament this past weekend, the Marymount (Va.) University baseball team continued its impressive season with a 7-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital over the Catholic University of America.

Senior Charlie DiGiulian collected his third win on the mound this season, tossing a solid 6.1 innings for just two runs and four strikeouts. The starting pitcher commanded early, using the first two innings to sit down the first three batters before the Saints put up two runs in the top of the third.

The scoring started on an error by the Cardinals, as the pitcher scooped up junior Lorenzo Calderon's grounder and sent a poor pass to first base to send freshman Luke Tyree from first to home and Calderon to third. On the next at bat, junior Brandon Savage brought in the game's first RBI with a single through the right side to score Calderon for the 2-0 lead.

Catholic answered in the bottom half of the frame with two runs of its own to draw the score up even. But that's all that would make its way around the bases against DiGiulian, holding the Cardinals scoreless through the rest of his day on the hill.

While the senior pitcher continued to tame the Cardinals, the Saints' offense continued to roll up the score with two more runs in the fifth. Savage earned a bases-loaded walk for his second RBI of the game as freshman Conner Hall walked home, before Tyree came sprinting home on a wild pitch on the next at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh, DiGiulian opened the frame with a strikeout before his day came to a close, seeing junior John LaMotta replace him in relief. Sitting the next two batters down on groundouts for a quick inning's work, LaMotta capped off his nation-leading 27th pitching appearance with no hits.

Sophomore Collin Bazemore took the mound for the eighth, giving up just one run on three hits, while stranding two following a pop and fly out to send the game into the final inning.

In their final at bat, the Saints solidified the victory with three more runs, kicked off by Hall with a RBI fielder's choice toward the third baseman to score sophomore Stephen Berczek. Two batters later, Calderon brought home Hall on a single up the middle before a sacrifice fly by Savage scored Tyree for the final run of the game.

Sophomore Sean O'Connell closed out the game for MU, not allowing a hit in the bottom half of the ninth to cap off the Saints' 27th win of the season.
