Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team put together a six-run fifth inning on Wednesday afternoon to put away Bridgewater (Va.) College in a 12-6 victory at Lake Myrtle Park. With the win, the Saints improve to 7-9 for the season.
Marymount got on the scoreboard right away, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Roy Coates smacked a single up the middle to bring home junior Brandon Savage. This was just one of a game-high four hits for the designated hitter, who brought home a game-high three RBI and made it around the bases once himself.
Freshman Brian Carmichael started on the mound for the Saints, but the Eagles got to him early, bringing around three runs in the bottom of the first before junior Scott Robison came in for relief.
The Saints answered with two more runs in the second to draw it even at 3-3 off a two RBI single by Savage. The junior first baseman fired a liner into right field to score freshman Luke Tyree and sophomore Kaden Darrow.
In the fourth, Bridgewater reclaimed the lead with a RBI single into left field, but Marymount sealed up the game in the following inning with six runs to push a 9-4 advantage.
In the fifth, Darrow kicked things off for the blue and white with a single that brought home Coates, and a throwing error by the left fielder that scored freshman Nick Smutko. Advancing to third on the throw, Darrow was eventually scored off a single by Tyree. Junior Brandon Orbe brought home the final three runs of the inning on a shot to the fence in left center field for a three-RBI double.
The sixth inning saw just one run hit the scoreboard in favor of the Eagles, before Marymount added three more in the seventh to cap off the scoring for the Saints. Coates hit a two-RBI single through the right side to score Savage and junior Lorenzo Calderon followed by Orbe stealing home.
The Eagles added just one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but that's as far as the scoring would go through the remainder of the game.
Junior John LaMotta earned the win on the mound, pitching three innings to strikeout three batters and give up just two runs off four hits.
The Saints finish up their spring break trip in Florida on Thursday, March 10, as they take on Penn State University-Altoona in a single nine-inning game at Lake Myrtle Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
