Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team traveled up to Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon for a Capital Athletic Conference showdown against Penn State University-Harrisburg, falling short, 5-3, to move to 7-3 in league play.
The first inning remained scoreless both ways, as senior Charlie DiGiulian took the mound for the Saints to work a three up-three down in the bottom half for a quick inning of work. The Lions continued to contain the Saints through the next two innings while bringing across the first two runs of the game in the bottom half of the second.
By the fourth inning, MU cut the deficit to one off the bat of freshman Nick Smutko. With a bases-load situation and two outs, Smutko stepped into the batter's box to smack a RBI single, scoring junior Brandon Savage to put the Saints on the board.
In the bottom half of the inning, PSU tacked on two more runs before adding another in the sixth to push ahead, 5-1. By the seventh, the Saints looked to rally with two more runs to close the gap to two. Senior Ryan Blake pinch hit for freshman Conner Hall with runners on the corners. Hitting a grounder to second base resulting in a double play, Blake was still able to get sophomore Stephen Berczek home for the first run of the inning.
Freshman Luke Tyree stepped in next with the bases cleared, smacking a triple to remove the Lions' pitcher before junior Lorenzo Calderon had his at-bat. With a new arm on the mound, Calderon didn't hesitate to put him to work, lining a RBI single to bring home Tyree. However, the Saints would get no closer to PSU, as the Lions held out for the 5-3 decision.
The Saints return home for their next contest, hosting York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 2 for a league doubleheader at Bishop O'Connell High School. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
