Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team fell for the first time in Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday, dropping a nine-inning twin bill to No. 14 Christopher Newport University.
Game 1: Christopher Newport 7, Marymount 4
Sophomore Collin Bazemore took the mound for the Saints in game one, working the hill for 5.2 innings for two strikeouts, holding the Captains to just two runs through four innings. But, on the offensive end for MU, the bats just couldn't drive home the runs, leaving eight runners on base through the nine-inning game.
By the beginning of the sixth, CNU worked up to a 5-0 advantage before the Saints crossed two over the plate to cut the deficit to three. With runners in scoring position in juniors Roy Coates and Ben Berczek, sophomore Stephen Berczek stepped into the batter's box to send a two-RBI single to center field.
In the next inning, junior Brandon Orbe followed suit with a single to right center to bring home junior Lorenzo Calderon to get the Saints within two of the Captains, 5-3.
Unable to bring anyone around the bases in the eighth, the Saints found the spread grow back to four runs when the Captains notched two RBI doubles in the bottom half of the inning to seal up game one. Calderon tried to get the offense rolling in the final inning, sending a shot over the left-field fence, but that's as close as MU would get, falling 7-4.
Game 2: Christopher Newport 11, Marymount 1
The final nine-inning game saw sophomore Dylan Gerdts command the mound for 4.1 innings, including holding the Captains scoreless through the first three. But CNU would still strike first, sending four across home plate in the bottom of the fourth.
The Saints looked to cut off the momentum in the top of the fifth when junior Brandon Savage singled to left center to score freshman Luke Tyree. However, Christopher Newport held MU off the board for the remainder of the day while adding seven more runs to take the 11-1 decision.
Marymount heads home for its next contest, facing off against another ranked opponent on Monday, March 28. The Saints will host No. 6 Randolph-Macon College at Bishop O'Connell High School for one nine-inning game with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
