Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University baseball team bagged its fourth top-15 victory on Wednesday afternoon, grabbing a 14-11 decision over No. 11 Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at Bishop O'Connell High School.
The Saints, who remain atop the league with a perfect 7-0 record, didn't hesitate to make a statement early in this one, as junior Lorenzo Calderon led off the bottom of the first inning, sending a moon shot over the tall left-field fence to put the blue and white ahead, 1-0. Senior Ryan Blake built the momentum more for the Saints in the bottom of the second, launching another shot over the fence, this time over right field.
Sophomore Sean O'Connell, who started on the mound for the Saints, continued to keep the Sea Gulls tamed through two scoreless innings before they struck in the top of the third with a two-run homer.
Marymount answered in the bottom of the third off the bat of junior Ben Berczek, smacking a RBI single to right field to bring home Calderon for the 3-2 advantage. Salisbury rallied back, however, to score two more runs in the top of the fourth to take its first lead of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth Marymount got hot, racking up seven runs on four hits. Freshman Luke Tyree got things started with a shot to right field that brought in two runs. Calderon followed up with a double down the left field line to score Tyree. Junior Brandon Savage continued the pattern with a single to left field, bringing in Calderon for a RBI.
The Saints loaded the bases before AJ Korczynski came in for relief of Connor Reeves at the mound for the Sea Gulls. The decision didn't play much into the favor of Salisbury, as junior Roy Coates took four balls before heading to first and bringing in Savage for the fifth run of the inning. Korczynski continued to struggle on the mound after hitting sophomore Stephen Berczek, adding another run for the Saints on the board. Blake brought in the last run of the inning after getting walked, pushing the Saints lead to 10-4.
Junior John LaMotta took over the mound for the Saints a third of the way through the top of the fourth. After loading the bases, Salisbury's Jack Barry sent one over the left field fence for a grand slam, cutting the deficit to two. Freshman Conner Hall finished the inning on the mound, maintaining their 10-8 lead.
Salisbury struck again in the top of the sixth to bring the game back within one after holding the Saints scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth.
Savage started the bottom of the eighth off with a double down the right field line. With Savage in scoring position, junior Brandon Orbe stepped up to the plate and put the ball in play, reaching first on an error by the shortstop and scoring Savage. Coates racked up his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to right field. Stephen Berczek fired the ball through the left side of the field to register a RBI and give the Saints a 13-9 lead before sophomore Kaden Darrow kept the rally going with another single through the left side, bringing Stephen Berczek home.
In a last-ditch effort, Salisbury's Jack Barry sent a second shot over the center field fence for two RBI in the top of the ninth, but Hall stood strong on the mound, sitting down the final two batters on strikeouts looking for his fourth win on the hill this season. Hall pitched 4.1 innings, registering three strikeouts and giving up just three runs off six hits.
The Saints will continue CAC play on the road with a doubleheader at No. 14 Christopher Newport University on Saturday, March 24. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
